Les Métiers du Cuir
During my studies, I realised that I wanted to work with leather. I was about twenty years old and I had my first experience working with it then. Now designing and making handbags and sandals is my full-time job.
I do everything myself; from making mood boards to working out technical details, creating prototypes, testing and ultimately the production itself. I like every step of the creative process, but the moment that you are struck by inspiration is still special every time.
What is your ambition as designer?
To provide beautiful, user-friendly things. And to not get too big as a brand as that is often at the expense of quality.
When do you consider your designs or creations as being successful?
If it is as beautiful, or even more beautiful than it was in my head.
Which (creative) Belgian do you admire?
René Magritte. His work appears simple, but it is anything but. The colours, the surrealism... He could construct a very surreal image with completely normal objects. My favourite work is 'Le Voyageur'; it is less impressive in a photo, so just go to the Magritte Museum in Brussels and see it for yourself!
What kind of music do you listen to?
Funk, soul, 80's pop and 70's rock.
Which book or film had a lasting impact on you?
Singing In The Rain.
