Glas & Glas
My biggest dream is to have the art of glass and especially stained glass windows be part of modern architecture again.
Glass preoccupies my every day life as I design glass jewellery for my brand Glas & Glas. Sixteen years ago now I decided that I wanted to work with glass so I started a course in the restoration of stained glass windows. The creation of a jewellery line came later as I wanted to reach a wider audience.
I make everything myself in my atelier. My aim as a designer is to create simple designs that stand out in their simplicity but that also have that little bit extra.
Describe the creative process from idea generation to finished product.
Usually it starts with a beautiful piece of glass that attracts my attention due to its colour, structure or glow. I then start working with that unique piece: cutting, breaking, grinding, polishing … until I get the right shape. These pieces of glass then go in to the oven where they are melted into each other. After a cooling time of ten hours I take them out of the oven and only the pieces that are perfect at the point will be used in the final product.
Where does your inspiration come from?
Everywhere. Ideas can come to me at anytime but especially when I lie awake at night!
Which (creative) Belgian do you admire?
I admire every creative Belgian that takes the leap of faith and turns their creative passion into their full time occupation.
What is your big dream?
My biggest dream is to have the art of glass and especially stained glass windows be part of modern architecture again. People have forgotten how beautiful stained glass windows can be.
If you were not doing what you are doing now, what would you be doing?
Still something creative. If I had to choose again maybe I would have been a carpenter or goldsmith.
