Chiaro e Scuro
If I were to be a historical figure, I would be Picasso. My love for art and creativity started at childhood - I always knew I wanted to be an artist.
Fortunately I have been able to develop my hobby into my job. My husband and I work together on our brand, Chiaro e Scuro, in our atelier in Heindonk. Our many travels and photos from quirky, unusual things that we discover along the way are always inspiration for new creations, whether it be paintings or ceramics.
My ceramic creations are usually made from black Spanish clay that turns lava black once baked in the oven. This contrasts beautifully with the bright, colourful metallic paint, making our work instantly recognisable.
Moulding the clay into beautiful shapes and seeing it come to life gives me enormous satisfaction. And I am overjoyed if these shapes then come out of the oven just as I had hoped!
What is the common thread in your work?
Colour and black - light and dark = Chiaro e Scuro
What is your ambition as designer?
To mould and finish my creations in such a precise and delicate way that people struggle to believe they are handmade.
If you were not doing what you are doing today, what would you be doing?
Which book or film had a lasting impact on you?
I read too much in fact...
Tell us something that typifies you but that we do not already know...
Colour is my passion, in gardening as well as the interior designs in our house.
